Gramatik – Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1

2 Comments 25 September 2011

Flow. The underlying factor of a great beat. Whether it is 5 minutes long or five hours, the right mix can take control, resulting in an involuntary head bang or foot tap. The easy-going hip-hop beats of Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1 hit the spot on just about every track; the flow, ever-present.

Gramatik is a relative new comer to the Chill Out/Trip-Hop/Instrumental Hip-Hop scene, and you would never guess from his music alone that he is from the tiny medieval township of Piran, in Slovenia. It is documented that at a young age he would often be found listening to old funk and R&B tracks on a radio in his sister’s room. This connection to music never stopped, although throughout his childhood  he developed an interest in many different styles. In 2008 Gramatik posted a few tunes on music site beatport.com just to see how much popularity he could gain. To his surprise the songs were a massive hit and his reputation sky-rocketed.  Street Bangerz Vol. 1 was his first album, released in 2009. In a massive 2010 he produced a further three albums and his name is gradually spreading globally.

Somehow, having been brought up in a town with a population of 4,000, Gramatik has developed a knack of producing the sort of slick urban beats that would normally be associated with the street culture of America. I can’t help but imagine strolling through the busy city listening to this album, staring at the bright lights and dodging rushing pedestrians.

A factor that really enhances the grooves of his music is his ability to layer funky samples smoothly with his own instrumental performances. In his own words: “I always looked at them as hip-hop beats on steroids. They are still raw, sample-based beats, but with evolved arrangements and wrapped in a fine layer of live instrumentation.  And the reason I started adding live instruments is because I felt that classic hip-hop beats without vocals lose me after two minutes.  I want to keep the listener through the whole track!”

I’ve had Beatz & Pieces constantly on repeat, and at the time of writing I am again listening to you know what. It is a solid album which I have enjoyed very much.

8.5/10

Hello, I am Mr Charles Lempriere, established 15 years ago in the town of Melbourne. Currently occupied in school and dog walking, its a relatively comfy life round my way. I enjoy switching lamps on and off (but not continuously or simultaneously as that would be wasting power), spending long periods listening to AM radio and taking well-earned day time naps. It is a dream of mine to hold both the Tetris and Vietnamese soup eating world records at the same time, while maintaining some form of clean skin. One day I would like to take residence in the mountains of Bhutan with the Layap people and their yaks. An honourable mention to the Scott Pilgrim series for being the best thing ever, So Yeah!
